Workshops on Innovation in the Caribbean spark the creativity of young entrepreneurs
As part of the efforts of the Youth-IN Entrepreneurship program to foster entrepreneurial spirit and create an innovation culture in the Caribbean, the UNDP Subregional Office for Barbados and the OECS and the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT), organized a series of Mini Business Labs: From Idea to Action workshops, targeted to young trainees in Grenada, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on during the month of July 2013.
These one-day workshops give their participants an overview on the development of a business model and encourage them to think as entrepreneurs. While providing hands-on tools, the Mini Business Labs are strongly focused on the creation of ideas and brainstorming. These are a first step towards the development of an entrepreneurial spirit – later honed within the framework of the 5-day Business Lab workshops and further improved in the preparation stages for the Caribbean Innovation Challenge (CIC) submissions.
Since June 2012, the program has trained over 1,400 young people in the region. On this occasion, the Mini Business Lab in Grenada on July 16th saw participation by 31 young people, taking place at the Wesley College Secondary School with the support from the Business Development Centre Grenada, while the one on July 25th was held in Carriacou with the support from the Department of Youth of Carriacou and Petite Martinique and trained 22 participants. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, 53 young people benefitted from the workshop held at the Kingston Cooperative Credit Union, organized with help from the organization of the same name and the Centre for Enterprise Development.
The program will continue providing training to young people in the region as a preparatory stage towards the Second Edition of the Caribbean Innovation Challenge, which will open registrations in the Fall. Please find the upcoming workshops and registration contacts below; however, we encourage you to check back frequently as more opportunities will be announced soon.
